Defensible Space
Creating and maintaining an adequate defensible space surrounding homes and other structures is extremely important in the Western US. Insurance companies require sometimes 150 ft. of distance between fuel and the home depending on slope condition. Minimally, Cal Fire requires at least a 30’ buffer of “clean and green” which means removal of all dead plants, grass and weeds. And trim all trees 6’ up off the ground and 10’ from other trees.
Fire engines require 10' of clearance on both sides of a driveway in order for an engine to safely travel through. Many times if these requirements are not met, help may not make it to your home or property in the even of a fire.
